ARTWORK SUMMARY

Calico:Merchant Thieves, 2018 (Slaves of Fashion Series)

In 1600, Queen Elizabeth I gave the East India Company a Royal Charter. Initially, the Company focused on trade. It did well and brought cotton calico fabric, indigo dye and tea to England. Later, the Company used force to get land and power in India.  The story of the British in India began with trade, but ended in conquest. This artwork is rich in imagery. It shows how the Europeans plundered great wealth and knowledge from India.  The main figure is ‘Calico Jack’, a pirate known for his colourful, calico waistcoats. A thieving magpie perches on Jack’s shoulder.  Above it, a blue, morning glory flower is a symbol of deceit.Below we see an angry silk weaver. He is shown beating a woman for wearing calico. British weavers feared losing their livelihoods due to imported Indian cotton. Feelings were running high. In 1701, the Calico Act banned the import of printed cotton cloth from India, in order to protect the British textile industry.
