ARTWORK SUMMARY

Liverpool 800:The Changing Face of Liverpool, 2007

This artwork was commissioned to mark Liverpool’s 800th birthday in 2007. It was unveiled to HRH Prince Charles at the formal re-opening of the newly renovated Liverpool St George’s Hall in 2008 where it is now on permanent public display. The artwork offers a detailed narrative of the city’s history and achievements from prehistoric times to the present day: mapping its development from an ancient trading town and centre of shipping, commerce and scientific and industrial innovation during Victorian times, to a modern day cultural capital. In particular the work acknowledges Liverpool’s darker history as a major slaving port. In 2010 the artwork became the subject of an award winning short animation film, titled, The Making of Liverpool and coffee table book by the same title. The central design reinterprets the traditional maritime imagery of Liverpool’s historic coat of arms, to present it’s new identity as a multicultural city of arts, entertainment and sport.
