ARTWORK SUMMARY

Get Your Knee Off Our Necks, 2020  (Slaves of Fashion Series)

This artwork responds to the murder of George Floyd by US police officer Derek Chauvin in May 2020. Much of the imagery draws on general media coverage and more specifically, the reaction of celebrity figures within the world of arts and entertainment (namely, actor George Clooney, film maker Spike Lee and singer Tyler Swift) to both the murder and to Donald Trump's handling of the protests which followed. Through this artwork, the Singh Twins add their voices to those protests but in a way that highlights how racist attitudes towards African Americans in the US today are underpinned by a colonial history steeped in slavery. Trump is depicted as a personification of the 'evil' of Institutionalised racism, snatching liberty and the right to public protest (represented by a gagged Statue of Liberty and the canister of tear gas at her feet) away from African Americans and demonstrators alike. In front of him are figures and other details representing the historical struggle for freedom and equality as well as the ongoing, systemic victimisation and oppression of African Americans, despite the so called abolition of slavery. Elsewhere, two Covid-19 viruses imprinted with the words "poor health, employment, education and housing", connect the deprivation suffered by Black communities in America over centuries with their higher risk of dying from the virus. A map beneath Trump's pedestal symbolises how racism and the need to combat it, is a global problem and responsibility.
