ARTWORK SUMMARY

Phulkari:Craft and Conflict, 2018  (Slaves of Fashion Series)

The figure in the artwork has a phulkari draped over her arm. The word means ‘flower work’ and originally described the embroidery technique of the Punjab in northern India. It later came to describe shawls decorated in this way. Phulkari were made by village girls and women in the Punjab, often as part of their dowry. They became popular with Europeans in the 19th century.  The hand-made shawls were displayed in Britain as home furnishings, expressing fashionable ‘oriental’ taste. Eventually, demand for cheaper versions increased and skilled craftwork gave way to mass production. In the artwork, the view through the window shows the British partition of the Punjab in 1947. This violent episode in Indian history destroyed the tradition of hand-made shawl production.  Another detail of the view shows the British execution of a leader of the Kuka movement, a 19th-century Punjabi resistance group. This group was the first to promote home-spun cloth as a way of undermining British rule.
